Beauty in Plain Sight

Beauty in Plain Sight was created days after the artist's grandmother died. It reflects a need for quiet and privacy amid grief. For Black women, life can become crowded with stuff and things, loud voices shouting nonsense, and losses that leave little room to hear their own thoughts. Even well-intended comfort can become another burden when what is needed is space to feel without interruption. A woman's face is partially hidden among overlapping patterns and textures, reflecting the artist's wish to retreat from view. Her beauty remains present amid the clutter, a reminder of how easily the beauty of those around us, and our very own--can go unnoticed when loss and noise overwhelm our sense of self.
